Technology career opportunity: Technical skills are more in demand than ever. 90 percent of domestic companies are looking for technical specialists, the proportion of women in technology is only 15 percent. This is where OMV comes in with its education initiative.

As part of OMV's “Resourcefulness” sustainability strategy, there are a number of educational initiatives in the field of technology. One of them - “Austria is looking for the technology queens” - starts with girls between the ages of 14 and 16: In a multi-stage competition, the young women can test their scientific and technical talent. At the same time, they can also collect ideas for training opportunities and professions that go beyond traditional role models. The results of the initiative, which has existed since 2012, speak for themselves: More than half of the participants can imagine doing an apprenticeship in the field of technology. The image of technology and the people who work in this area has changed positively for 59 percent of the girls after participating. For many, taking up a technical profession has come to the fore as a possible, sometimes even concrete, option.

The Technikqueens initiative 2016 starts with an online challenge on the platform www.technikqueens.at. The target group are girls, their friends, families and teachers. In the largest Austrian gamification project, interest and enthusiasm for technology are aroused and encouraged in seven game missions.

The next round is open to girls between the ages of 14 and 16. The top 300 of the online challenge create a "portfolio" in the form of an experiment or a report. Experts from the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz evaluate each individual work and determine the 50 finalists.

At the final weekend in June 2016, the girls will travel to Vienna with one of their parents, where they will present their theses after intensive workshops. The 25 best girls will be chosen by a jury of experts as the “Technology Queens 2016”. Educational checks worth 2500 euros each and a place in a mentoring program run by corporate partners OMV, Siemens, Borealis, Microsoft, ÖBB and RHI await them. The educational initiative is also supported by the City School Council for Vienna.
