Girls' Day: women in "male professions"
Girls' Day: women in "male professions"

Girls' Day offers school girls the opportunity to learn about manual, technical and scientific professions. Why this is still important

It is still a fact that most professions are divided into female or male: Two thirds of the female population work in typical female professions, such as kindergarten teachers, hairdressers, nurses, secretaries or cleaners. Only eight percent of women are in (heavily) segregated male professions, i.e. practically everything that has to do with technology, craft or production. The stereotype of the "technically distant" woman as an explanation for the low proportion of women in technical professions persists.

The nationwide Girls' Day fights against the rigid role model for the 17th time in a row. Getting girls and young women enthusiastic about future-oriented and technical professions - that’s what it’s all about again on April 26th. On the day of action, they have the opportunity to try out professions and thus get to know jobs that go beyond the stereotypes of roles. Because just because of the choice of profession, there are sometimes massive wage differences between the sexes from the start. According to the labor market service, the gross monthly starting salary after completing the apprenticeship for hairdressers is 1,425 euros, while auto mechanics or network technicians start at 1,890 euros.

After all, metal technology is now one of the ten most popular jobs for girls, which would have been inconceivable ten years ago. The initiative of the Ministry of Women can also be responsible for this.

Goal of Girls' Day:

In addition to the Federal Chancellery, the ministries and parliament, Telekom Austria, Austro Control and Asfinag are among others. At the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics, the girls learn how to manage environmental crises or measure earthquakes. At the ÖBB, the participants discover "the world of the railways" and at the prison "the world behind bars".
