Parents of two to three year old children cannot avoid the pink pig Peppa Pig. But experts warn against the children's series. Why?

The hype surrounding Peppa Pig is a mystery to me. My niece fell into the pig family especially between the ages of two and three years. Her stuffed pig accompanied her everywhere, the grunting pigs always close at hand on YouTube. Nothing entertained her like Peppa Pig. She is not alone in this: the British cartoon series is a complete success. Peppa Pig is said to be too violent for children. At least that's what a new study from Bath University says, which, in addition to six other children's series, also examined ten popular family films - including "Toy Story" and "Frozen".

Peppa Pig shows too little empathy

But how can this pink piglet affect children negatively? The researchers are convinced that Peppa Pig has too little empathy. Especially when others hurt themselves. "We know that children spend more and more time watching these series, and what they fictitiously record has a very strong influence on their understanding of real everyday situations!" Explains Dr. Jordan, one of the study directors.

There are said to be nine of these injury situations per hour in the series. What the British researchers noticed less is the fact that Peppa Pig's choice of words needs to be questioned. However, this is based on the fact that only the German translation of some phrases is questionable. The little pink pig says to her father in the German version "stupid papa", but in the English version "silly dad", which is rather funny and means something like "oh papilein". Well, maybe it's best to watch it together with the children.

In any case, my niece has meanwhile become addicted to the popular series "Paw Patrol", which I find far more problematic with only one female (!) Dog heroine than Peppa Pig.
