Our country is standing still, luckily innovation and research are not - not even in the beauty industry. What does 2021 bring us in the beauty sector? We started looking for the latest trends and technologies and also asked the skin expert and owner of the Babor Beauty SPA, Vera Pöllabauer, in the first district of Vienna.

These beauty trends will be big in 2021

1. Deep needling

Radiofrequency needling will be one of the big topics in the cosmetics sector this year. While the well-known microneedling and vampire lifting have already been hyped, radiofrequent needling surpasses them by far in terms of effectiveness.

"With one to three treatments and a lasting result of up to seven years, this variant is no comparison with any other device-based lifting. The results are unbelievable and, in my opinion, 80 percent of it will replace an operative lifting," says Pöllabauer with conviction.

As Deep needling functions? With the microneedling needles, the smallest artificial transport channels are created and the radio-frequency current is emitted through them. This leads to a so-called shrinking effect, which causes the connective tissue to shrink. It also attacks fat cells in double chins or hanging cheeks, for example. The fat in the fat cell is heated, released from the fat cell and transported away.

"In addition, the own regeneration process is activated, growth factors are released and fibroblasts are stimulated. Fibroblasts are responsible for the production of collagen and elastin fibers," explains the skin expert.

It can also be used to treat active, cystic acne and even acne scars. The downtime is a maximum of one to two days, the pain factor is low because the skin is numbed beforehand.

Cost factor between 350 and 700 € per treatment, depending on the size of the area.

2. Skin care that focuses on the microbiome

The microbiome in combination with skin care is also a brand new approach. "It seems as if the germs that live on the skin communicate with the intestinal germs and certain inflammatory processes in the context of skin diseases are also related to the intestinal microbiome and skin microbiome," said the doctor Veronika Lang.

Almost a hundred different bacteria colonize our skin. Similar to the intestinal bacteria, however, they are helpful as long as they are in a balanced equilibrium. Then the skin with its acidic pH value and its natural defense mechanisms - such as sebum - can fight off harmful bacteria.

However, our modern habits are sometimes harmful to the balance of the skin: it cannot tolerate the chlorinated water of the outdoor pool, nor daily hot showers, nor the use of different soaps and lotions. The natural fats of the microbiome get out of balance as a result of these presumed care and hygiene measures and as a result the skin flakes, itches and reddens. Pre- and probiotic cosmetics are supposed to restore balance to the skin. Bifidus bacteria, a probiotic, are said to support the skin's immune response, for example. Other beauty brands are working with live bacteria to target the same effect.

3. The Epidermal Growth Factor

There is also a huge innovation in the field of active ingredient cosmetics that was first approved on the market. The epidermal growth factors, better known by the English name Epidermal Growth Factors are vegetable peptides that stimulate the epidermis to grow. What does that bring us?

"I work very intensively with so-called acne scars, also known as key scars - we can rebuild and level the skin precisely where the scar is," says Pöllabauer.

The second important area of treatment is thin skin. Studies have shown that it is not the wrinkles that make us look old, but the density of the skin. A youthful skin is dense and rich in tissue, you don't see any veins shining through: "Our tissue density decreases with age and the skin becomes more or less glassy. With EGFs we can let the skin density grow strongly and thus gain a healthy, vital complexion - almost like before. These are used as a serum or a cream twice a day, "says the skin expert.
